Jennifer Turnbull

Jennifer completed Graduate Diplomas in Opera Performance and Vocal Performance studied at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU), appearing in numerous QCGU productions including L’enfant et les sortilèges (The Bat and The Shepherdess) and Orpheus in the Underworld (Eurydice). During this time, she was a semi-finalist in the McDonalds Operatic Aria Competition, the recipient of the Conservatorium Postgraduate Vocal Scholarship, and winner of the Alton Budd Memorial Competition.

Jennifer became an ensemble member of Opera Queensland in 2000, appearing in productions of Andrea Chénier and Tosca.

Other performances include the roles of Cupid in Orpheus in the Underworld, Lisa in La Sonnambula, Valencienne in The Merry Widow and Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance (all for Rockdale Municipal Opera Company).

After studying with renowned British mezzo soprano Enid Hartle, Jennifer returned to Australia and was invited to join the Opera Queensland Young Artist program, performing at numerous corporate events and concerts. Jennifer performed the role of the First Spirit and covered the role of Papagena in Opera Queensland’s production of The Magic Flute. She appeared as a solo Handmaiden in Opera Queensland’s production of Turandot. Jennifer also covered the role of the Page in Rigoletto and appeared as a Grisette in The Merry Widow, both for Opera Queensland.

On the concert platform, Jennifer has appeared as a soloist with the Queensland Choir, Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra, Queensland Pops Orchestra and the Australian Army Band Brisbane. She has also performed as a soloist in the Catulli Carmina and Trionfo di Afrodite at the Australian Intervarsity Choral Festival in Brisbane, and Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle and Mozart’s Requiem for the Sunshine Coast Choral Society.

In 2013, Jennifer appeared with the ensemble in Opera Australia’s Carmen on Sydney Harbour.

Jennifer has taught in several high schools in Brisbane and Wollongong, teaching privately, directing choirs and leading vocal workshops. Her students have achieved excellent results in singing exams, vocal competitions and performing in productions.

Jennifer has been very fortunate to have worked with many world class vocal teachers, vocal coaches, conductors and directors. She is passionate about passing the skills and knowledge she has gained onto other aspiring singers and bases her teaching on the belief that the art of singing demands constant pursuit of the mastery of vocal and performance technique.
